Loretta’s greetings:
On behalf of the Rural Alabama Prevention Center, the Rural Health Outreach staff and board of directors, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to our website. Please review the numerous articles on health information and disease prevention.
Our desire is to engage communities in adopting strategies that address the prevention and management of chronic diseases by changing eating habits and engaging in some form of physical activity daily. Several healthcare studies have shown that chronic diseases represent the biggest threat to health and wellness, one of the drivers of increased healthcare cost in the United States. However, the good news is chronic diseases are preventable when effective intervention is applied.
Since the inception of the South West Health Improvement Initiative (SWAHII), Rural Alabama Prevention Center and its partnering agencies have provided nearly 5,000 residents throughout 18 of Alabama’s counties access to preventive health education, resources, and care management. Within these services areas, over 60 churches have implemented the use of the Body and Soul Wellness curriculum in their churches with evidence in how their members expressed improvement in their overall health. In our hospital and clinical settings, several providers have witnessed how having a care coordinator connect with their patients weekly aided in the reduction in office and hospital emergency room visits.
While our roster of community-based partners continues to work to ensure that residents in rural Alabama are knowledgeable of their health risk factors, we encourage everyone to get involved in your health, the health of your family, and the health of your community. With all of us working together, we can ensure a healthier Alabama.
It is my hope that this website will provide tools and information to increase your knowledge of the importance of developing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
